Forest planting – professional reforestation services across Estonia

Combitrans provides forest owners with professional forest planting and regeneration services across Estonia. We use modern Risutec PM planting machines that ensure a fast work pace, high-quality planting, and up to 3 years of maintenance-free growth. Our service covers the entire process — from planning and seedling procurement to work documentation and final inspection.

Why and when to renew and plant a forest?

After logging or natural damage, a forest needs to be renewed to ensure land productivity and forest vitality. In Estonia, renewing a forest after clear-cutting is also a legal obligation – it must be done within two years.

A properly planted forest provides future income for the owner, increases property value, and helps maintain ecological balance. The main reasons for forest renewal and planting are:

  • Renewal after clear-cutting – a legal obligation and an investment in the future.

  • Restoration after storm damage or disease – to ensure the forest remains healthy and productive.

  • Establishing new forests – to increase land value and create new growth opportunities.

The best time for planting is from spring to early summer (April–June) and from late summer to autumn (August–October). Planting in midsummer may be too dry and hot for optimal growth.

Forest planting process – how does it work?

Our goal is to make forest regeneration simple and transparent for the forest owner. In general, the process consists of the following main steps:
  • 1) Initial consultation and site assessment
  • 2) Scheduling the work
  • 3) Procurement of planting material
  • 4) Machine planting
  • 5) Documentation and inspection
1) Initial consultation and site assessment

We review the forest area together, determine the most suitable regeneration method, and provide an initial estimate of the workload and cost.

2) Scheduling the work

We agree with the client on the execution time of the work, taking into account the optimal planting period and weather conditions.

3) Procurement of planting material

We help you choose the right tree species based on the site conditions – in Estonia, pine, spruce, birch, and alder are most commonly used. For example, pine requires a lot of sunlight, while spruce is sensitive to sunburn. Alder is suitable for wet areas where other species cannot thrive. Making the right choice ensures better growth and long-term vitality of the young forest.

4) Machine planting

We use Risutec PM planting machines, which ensure precise and efficient work and provide up to 3 years of maintenance-free forest establishment.

5) Documentation and inspection

The planting work we perform is recorded using GPS. Upon request, the client receives a report detailing the completed work.

Forest planting with Risutec PM machines

For forest planting, our fleet includes three Risutec PM planting machines. These are planting units that can be attached to a forestry machine, preparing the soil, opening the planting spot, and placing the seedling in the ground in a single smooth motion.

The machine performs several tasks at once – it tills the soil, plants the seedling at the correct depth, and, if needed, applies fertilizer. This ensures consistent quality and a higher survival rate of the seedlings compared to manual planting.

The forest remains maintenance-free for up to 3 years

Higher work efficiency and lower cost per hectare.

Higher seedling survival rate

Flexibility across different terrains

GPS tracking and documentation – clear overview of completed work

How is the forest planting price determined?

The cost of forest planting is calculated primarily based on the number of planted seedlings and the overall scope of work. Additionally, the following factors influence the total price:

  • selected planting material (pine, spruce, birch, alder),
  • location and accessibility of the area,
  • the need for preparatory work.

In general, machine planting is more cost-effective per hectare than manual planting, as the work is faster and the result more consistent. However, we can provide an exact quote after inspecting the area — the initial consultation and price offer are completely free for you.
